Stained glass supplies needed to make a beautiful window or lamp.
Pattern ~ The first thing you will need for your project is
a pattern. You can design your own or choose a pattern that already has a design. There are plenty of free stained glass patterns
available online. Make a copy of the pattern.
Patterns Shears ~ Patterns shears are used to cut out the pattern. These shears
are specially designed so when you are cutting the patterrn a small strip of the pattern is removed to allow for the heart of the
lead.
Stained Glass ~ Choose the color or texture of the glass you want to use.
Glass Cutter ~ A glass cutter is used to
cut the glass. It works by putting a score on the glass that allows you to break the glass on that line. There are many
different types of cutters. Find one that fits well in your hand.
Breaking Pliers ~ Breaking pliers are used when you are unable
to break the glass with your hands. When cutting a straight line you can usually break the glass on the score line with your
hands, more intricate cuts require the use of a breaking pliers.
Lead ~ Lead usually comed in 6 ft strips and in various widths
depending on it's use. It is wrapped around the perimeter of the cut pieces of glass. Wider strips are made for the border of your
project or for larger windows that require more support.
Copper Foil ~ For small projects or lamp shades copper foil is used
in place of lead. The foil is a thin tape with an adhesive backing the allows it to stick to the glass.
Soldering Iron ~ A soldering
iron is used to solder all the joints together where the lead meets. On copper foil projects the entire surface of the foil is soldered.
Cement ~
Cement is a semi liquid type of glazing substance that is used to seal the window after it is completed. It is applied to the
window with a scrub brush making sure you work it into the space between the lead and glass.
Whiting ~ Whiting is plaster type
of substance that is brushed on to window after it is cemented. It absorbs the rest of the cement mixture from the window.
Fid ~ A fid is a plastic piece used to open up the lead so the glass can fit in, it is also used to flatten out any higher surfaces
of the lead.
Grinder ~ Grinders are used to smooth out the edge of the glass after it is cut.
Soldering Flux ~ Flux is
used to clean the surface of the lead prior to soldering.
Wet Sponge ~ The sponge is used to clean offer the tip of the soldering
iron.
